Ostia Antica Archeological Park

Ostia Antica, at the mouth of the River Tiber, was ancient Rome’s very important seaport and bustling town, but due to silting and subsequent changes in the geology of the land, it became abandoned and the site now lies 3 kilometres (2 miles) from the sea. Dating back to the 4th century BC, the site is noted for the excellent preservation of its ancient buildings, magnificent frescoes and impressive mosaics. The amphitheatre alone is well worth seeing and in summer months, is host to a number of concerts and other cultural events.
